> Rude awakening
Day 35 - 3372km, Olad Berhil, Morocco. It was a startlingly early wake up today for both me and the unfortunate hostel attendant who I accidentally groped when searching for my camera battery charger in the dark. Following a hasty and apologetic departure, I had a fantastic day riding along quiet alpine roads through spectacular scenery, friendly Berber Villages and down an adrenalin pumping descent from a 2000m pass. I also bumped into long time tourer Bruno (...

> On top of North Africa
Day 34 - Imlil, Morocco. So my light weight cycling attire, every last item of it, stood up to the sub zero mountainous challenge that is Mount Toubkal and I reached the 4167m summit this morning to savour another malt loaf moment on the highest point in North Africa! The scenery and views were truly spectacular and it was great to have the company of English lads George, Mike and Matt at times during the 2 day trek - unfortunately, as it later transpired, this was much...

> Atlas High !
Day 32 - 3222km Imlil, Atlas Mountains, Morocco. When leaving Marrakech this morning I decided on a whim to make the most of my location by taking the Atlas Mountains head on and hopefully climbing Mount Toubkal in the process. I had hoped to do the trek in one day but on the advice of other hikers and guides I've settled for two, particularly as my budget doesn't stretch to a guide. I'm confident that I'll make up the lost time in the desert!

> Things are hotting up
Day 31 - 3153km Marrakech, Morocco. I drank over 6lt today with temperatures soaring into the upper 30`s and a few unexpected hills making it a surprisingly tough one in the saddle. Still I finished in good time and have since been checking out the sights of Marrakech - perhaps a few less than I should have done after spending close to 45min trying to get a rubber ring suspended from a stick over a coke bottle. Having paid 50p for the...

> Daily movements
Day 30 - 3011km Near Sidi Rahal, Morocco. You may not wish to continue hearing about my daily movements with a few days of eating like the locals, including a rich variety of street biscuits, pastries, pancakes and non-descript meats, resulting in some inevitable side effects; still at least bicycle shorts can be multi purpose - Paula Radcliffe clearly entered the wrong sport! Despite a few extra unscheduled stops, I made great progress through a busy and unspectacular coastal...

> Follow the painted lady !
Day 29 - Rabat. It appears that I have company on the road southwards in the form of Painted Lady Butterflies as they return to the Atlas mountains following a quite incredible 9 month migration! Having observed these butterflies as they travelled northwards in record numbers through the UK last spring (after their departure from the Morocco in February), and again as they returned southwards before I left home, I am now fortunate enough to...

> Britain's biggest pie eater
Day 28 - Rabat. I am currently exploring the medinas and casbahs of Rabat while waiting for my Mauritania visa to be processed, and wondering what might have been.... in this year's Wookey Hole Mince Pie Eating Contest! Congratulations to Denzel Gunner for gobbling down 33 pies in 10 minutes and retaining the title as Britain's Biggest Pie Eater. Tri4africa was almost postponed for this prestigious event and I am gutted...

> Horn concerto
Day 27 - 2792km Rabat. My little horn is now feeling somewhat inadequate by comparison to the rich variety of vociferous horns used with an exuberance to reflect the personalities of their Moroccan owners. I've rapidly had to learn that maps and signs, if they exist, don't always correspond, that secondary roads are likely to be pot holed or sandy and bicycles are at the bottom of the road users' pecking order with horn blasts meaning "get off the road" rather...

Day 26 - 2660km Oulad Berrkho, Morocco. It feels great to be back on the bike after a week's rest and I'm enjoying the sensory bombardment of Africa - already today I've seen live sheep strapped to a car roof and been hounded by local salesman who put my linguistics to shame, pulling out all manner of languages and accents, I'm still waiting for a Wiltshire accent but the first that does has got himself a buyer.
Having thought I'd have to revise my camping tactics I...
