Day 247 - Fri 03 June 19,625km Estcourt, SA

Wanting to escape the bitter cold this morning we decided to take up last night's generous offer of a free makeover in a local salon and took an image changing early break. Little did I know what I was letting myself in for and I emerged shellshocked and feeling somewhat victimised two hours later with a horrific golden and ginger straightened beard and a 70s afro hair style with fringe....

Day 246 - Thu 03 June 19,562km Nottingham Road, SA

With Danny and Sam raring to hit the road northwards to Rustenburg it was gutting to discover both of thier bikes had been battered in transit and would require a lot more expertise to fix than our amateurish efforts. Fortunately the local bike store came to the rescue and we were able to focus our efforts on transforming our bikes into patriotic...

> Comrades Report

Posted On: Friday, 4 June 2010 - 00:29

After 8 months spent swimming and cycling from England to South Africa I crawled out of my nice warm bed at 3.45am on Sunday morning to take on the final leg of my charity triathlon, the 89km (56mile) Comrades Ultra Marathon. Having chowed down some muesli, liberally applied vaseline, plastered the nipples, attempted and failed to lighten the day's load & slipped into a homemade bin bag dress, or in James's case a particularly fetching pair of Sammy's tights, to ward off the cold, we...

Day 242 - Sun 30 May  19,500km Durban, SA

Yebo yes me and James have made it to Durban on foot! Taking just under eight torturous hours I was really chuffed to come 815th out of over 20,000 runners given my preparation although the 89km hilly course has left me utterly exhausted and I'm now shuffling around like an OAP with bake bean size blisters on my feet. The atmosphere and support along the way...

Day 241 - Sat 29th May ~ 19500km, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Having taken a worryingly long bus tour of the Comrades route yesterday, I was deeply troubled to discover just how many brutal hills lie in wait between here and Durban despite it supposedly being a downhill year! Passing signs for places like 'A Valley of a Thousand Hills' my legs were soon spasming at just the prospect of tackling the rugged terrain and by the time we reached the end of the route,...

Day 238 - Wednesday 26th May ~ 19500km , Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Since returning from a relaxing weekend spent hiking and fishing for our dinner in the Drakensberg Mountains (needless to say we ended up eating in the restaurant) it has become a bit of a media frenzy as the business end of the Ultra Triathlon - the Comrades run - approaches and World Cup fever grows. One local...

Day 233  -  Fri 21 May ~ 19,488km, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Having submitted details of my World Cup mission to Continental's competition to find football's biggest fan from a dodgy internet connection in the Congo, I hadn't given it a second thought until checking my junk mail on Wednesday I found out I'd somehow qualified for the final!

With a one minute video submission already well overdue I recruited my...

Day 232 - Thurs 20 May ~ 19488km, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Woohoo I've finally made it to Pietermaritzburg from where I've just got the mere task of running 89 km of torturous hills down to Durban and then finding enough energy, with malt loafs help, to cycle back to Rustenburg and watch England K.O a world cup winning campaign! It's also wonderful to be reunited with my folks...

Day 229  -  Mon 17 May ~ 19,463km, Howick, South Africa

Travelling along the scenic but torturously hilly Midlands Meander today the road certainly lived up to its title as I slowly edged ever closer to the comrades start point, Pietermaritzburg, and a reunion with my folks who arrive tomorrow. Sent off by Isabel with a christmas...

Day 228 - Sun 16 May ~ 19370km, Escourt, South Africa

After a damp restless night in my extremly pungent 1 man tent I woke this morning with a worrying amount of stiffness in my legs given the 18km rocky mountainous dirt trail I had to start the day. Saying goodbye to a great bunch of runners as they cruised past in their 4x4's it really tested my resolve to stick too...
