> Grapefruit surprise.
Day 224 - Wed 12 May ~ 19,078km, Newcastle, South Africa
I was shocked to wake up to my first frost this morning and despite delaying over a cooked breakfast from Doris it was a bitterly cold start to the day in my woefully inadequate cycling gear. Later on I chanced upon an overturned truck of grapefruits being swarmed over by locals so I duly got involved and now have a week's supply weighing me down. Using them to barter for accommodation in Newcastle I was fortunate that local Barry overheard my pitch at a guest house, took pity on my feral appearance and generously offered me a place to stay for the night in return for a grapefruit! Treated to a couple of beers with his mates and given plenty of stick for looking like a hobo I was then fed a delicious boerwors dinner cooked by his lovely wife Elma and made to feel truly at home (thanks guys).

Dear Rob,
My husband, Johnathan, met you along your way from Newcastle to Ladysmith. He hasn't stopped talking about you the whole day now. You've made a huge impact on him. He thinks your'e the best thing since toasted cheese for taking on this adventure. Well done Rob!!!!!!! Well done in a good way and well done in a sarcastic way. Now I will most probably be a cycling widow for a few weeks :). That's he's ultimate dream to cycle from once side of SA to the other side. Keep up the great work your doing Rob and may God be with you every step of your journey. Warm regards, Chantel & Johnathan Tinkler. Newcaslte, South Africa.
