> Crocodile surprise
Day 135 – Friday 12 February – 12,591km, Oyem, Gabon
Gabon appears to be a very quiet and friendly country with less street commerce than other West African countries, which is perhaps not surprising given that it has gone through 40 years of stability, only has a population of 1.5 million, despite it’s significant size and is 75% covered in tropical rainforests. Unfortunately, in touring terms, this means less readily available supplies, relentless hills and stifling humidity. Still, wildlife viewing should also be on the up, although my first exotic encounter, much to Leo’s disgust, arrived on my dinner plate in the form of a crocodile stew, which once the hide was removed, proved to be a tasty catch! Let’s hope not all of Gabon’s wildlife ends up on the menu. We are also yet to see any forest dwelling pygmies, but I think a few must use the guest house we’re staying in, judging by the 5 foot bed I’m trying to sleep in.

Hello Rob, I loved the crocodile surprise. It was very funny.
Fantastic photos
Thank you for the great new photos! What a week Helen had - she somehow managed to stay a whole lot cleaner than you! Looking forward to some shots of Mount Cameroon. Maybe we will see Ron in the next few days for some first hand accounts? Go well. Sue & Clem
