> Happy New Year!
Day 92, 9079 km, Yeji, Lake Volta, Ghana
It’s looking extremely unlikely we’ll be up to see the New Year in having had a tiring day on dirt roads that have left us with the orange glow of Essex blondes out to make the most of 2009! Not realising the distance across Lake Volta I also have to confess to taking a ferry. If its any consolation, we were on board a wooden boat with one working motor, 50 Ghanaians, an assortment of farmyard animals and a couple of token Germans, so CO2 offsetting shouldn’t pose a problem. With bilharzia present in Lake Volta, swimming was unfortunately not an option, although it definitely would have been quicker than the 5 hour wait for sufficient people to gather for a crossing. Having finally made it to Yeji as the sun was setting we booked into the first accommodation we came across desperate to remove our fake tans but only to discover the town is currently without running water! Still at least the hotels numerous UV lights should leave Helen with a more lasting tan to take into 2010!
