Day 206 – Sat 24 April - 17,626 km, Maun, Botswana

Battling doggedly to even get up to 14 kph against prevailing headwinds this morning, I was going through a particularly dark patch at the prospect of a day of such hardship, when from the other direction a blur of lycra and carbon fibre came racing at me, followed closely by an entourage of vehicles, trucks and other riders. It soon transpired that I had come across the annual Cairo to Cape Town 4 month tour and conveniently their lunch stop was just around the corner. Never one to miss out an opportunity for a free feed and feeling famished, I was soon stuffing my face with a mouth watering range of wraps, fillings and sauces. Reluctant to face the wind again and enjoying the company of 60 fellow cyclists, it took a while to drag myself away from the spread. The comraderie and support on such a trip must be great, but I can’t help thinking how much they miss out on sampling street food and interacting with the locals. I'm now very much on the beaten trail through Southern Africa and am frequently passed by oap driven 4*4's and overland trucks crammed with oxygen starved tourists.

Eventually making it very slowly to Maun, I couldn't help noticing from posters that by some twist of fate, tonight of all nights, with an evening of red meat and beer planned, there is a cleavage party in town!!
