> Bizarre wildebeest, & elephant standoff
Day 212 – Fri 30 April - 17,819 km, Gweta, Botswana
I’m finally back on the road south after an amazing couple of days wildlife viewing. Assisting my mate James on his Zebra research project, not only did I get a unique opportunity to help dart some zebra, but I am also now an expert in handling and guessing the weight of zebra pooh. Other sightings ranged from the incredible lions hunting springbok, herds of a few thousand zebra, to the truly bizarre – a particularly special wildebeest that was hopping around on 3 legs, having got one of its front legs stuck behind its horn. The lions could certainly do the wildebeest gene pool a favour there! The wildlife excitement continued this afternoon, as cycling to Gweta, I bumped into various elephants and had one particular adrenalin-pumping face off. Needless to say, Bertha’s flamboyance and stature won out and the elephant backed down allowing me to make it to Planet Baobab Lodge just before nightfall.
