Day 100, 9585 km, Carla & Frank’s home, Accra, Ghana
I think the painfully slow West African pace is catching up with me as I find myself enjoying a third rest day in a row – my longest break since waiting for suitable swim conditions for the Straits in Spain. With Helen and The Mongoose sadly departed for the snow clad UK last night, I’m still hanging around Accra in the hope that a shipment of recycled bikes destined for the partner project here will receive harbourside clearance so that I can help with the unloading. I’ve got a feeling my patience will break before those of the importation officials, but in the meantime I’m focusing on regaining some weight. Unfortunately our colonial food legacy stops at processed white bread, so with street side “toad in the hole”, fried breakfasts and pies (with little more substantial inside than year old fish paste), not an option, I’m filling up on fried guinea fowl, bush rat and plantain. Fortunately an introduction to Carla & Frank, via my NZ cousins, has resulted in them very kindly letting me stay in their house while they are away! Returning to my tent could be hard after such luxury! Thanks Carla & Frank and also to their neighbours, the Hoefnagels, who had Helen and me round for a tasty dinner last night.
